Urban Initiatives congratulates Coach Faye Stevens-Jett for being honored with the Coach of the Year Award from Up2Us, an organization that supports youth development programs that use sports to improve the lives of kids across the country. Coach Jett, the Athletic Director and PE teacher at Morton School of Excellence, is a member of Urban Initiatives Coaches Corps (UICC). The goal of UICC is to enhance the character development, health education, physical fitness, and academic engagement in youth in the Chicago Public Schools.
Professional Skateboarder Tony Hawk headlined the award ceremony which was held on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. After receiving the award, Coach Jett gave a moving speech on the impact that a coach can have on a child's life. While Coach Jett was characteristically modest in her speech, we would like to share a quote from a source close to her at Morton School:
“Faye goes above and beyond the call of duty to make sure her students have the things they need. She is consistently incredible.”
The award ceremony was a part of the three-day Up2Us National Summit in D.C. Senior Program Associate Tom LaClair represented Urban Initiatives at the action-packed summit. Other highlights of the summit included:
