Tarkington Turns Out Numbers

SDC11682.JPGWhen Urban Initiatives started the Work to Play Program at Tarkington we were confident that our program would be a great fit in the West Lawn neighborhood. No one predicted, however, how popular the program would be and how quickly it would impact the Tarkington community.

Currently we are serving 48 committed students at Tarkington with our health and education soccer program. Not only is the number of kids on the roster impressive, but also the energy, passion and dedication they show at each practice. Their thirst for knowledge is apparent during our health and character discussions. After just four weeks of having the program, when asked what kinds of foods were eaten before joining the program, 3rd grade participant, Iyanna stated, "I used to eat flaming hots, now I eat fruits like bananas and apples"

On Friday, May 6th Tarkington hosted their first game against Libby. Over 60 fans showed up to cheer the team on. It was a fantastic day where the kids got a chance to show off their skills. Coach Vaca the On Site Program Director – Head Coach – at Tarkington was impressed with the turnout at the game and is looking forward to hosting other teams!

We are excited that Tarkington has joined the Urban Initiatives team and look forward to the growth of our partnership!
