2nd Annual Big Kid Recess

Saturday May 7th was a beautiful spring morning – the perfect setting for Urban Initiatives’ 2nd Annual Big Kid Recess at Jenner Academy. Joined by 10 adults (big kids), Work to Play teams from Lawndale Academy, Nobel Elementary, and Beidler Elementary teamed up for a morning of fun and exciting recess games.

The kids made a big splash at the water balloon toss station. Working as a pair, they had to step farther and farther back after each toss of the water balloon. Joyful screams and laughter erupted each time a balloon popped.

At another station, kids and adults practiced their concentration and balance as they carried spoons with pingpong balls nestled on top across the field. Next, the kids battled the adults in tug of war. The work to play kids showed their muscles by conquering every time!

Whether they were playing a game of giant twister or competing in a relay race, both the Work to Play kids and the Big Kids had a great time. Everyone shared in a healthy lunch of fresh veggie, turkey, and ham sandwiches topped off with water, an apple, and a granola bar. All in all, the day was a shining success!

Urban Initiatives would like to give a huge shout out to David Grass and the Big Kid Recess Host Committee for helping to organize another incredibly successful event. This is a day our student athletes have looked forward to since last year, and we can’t wait for next year’s Big Kid Recess!
