Score a Goal Breakfast

On Thursday May 5, Urban Initiatives hosted its inaugural Score a Goal Breakfast at the Virgin Hotel, hosted by Optiver. Serving as an introduction to Urban Initiatives’ programs and impact, the breakfast drummed up support for the Corporate Challenge Cup on July 16, a one-day soccer tournament that brings together 24 co-ed adult teams representing Chicagoland businesses.
The morning began with remarks by Emily Taft from Optiver, the presenting sponsor of the Corporate Challenge Cup. She touched upon the strong desire Optiver has to give back to the Chicago community, specifically with Urban Initiatives.
Brian McBride, former professional soccer player with the United States Men’s National Team, spoke to how sports has impacted his personal and professional life. He noted that Urban Initiatives successfully uses sports to bring kids, parents, and communities together in an impactful way.
Krish Mohip, the Chief Officer/Chief of Schools for CPS and long-time supporter of Urban Initiatives, offered a heartfelt and personal perspective on how Urban Initiatives offers a safe and constructive choice when they otherwise could get involved with gang activity. He noted that he actively brought Urban Initiatives in each school he worked in because he deeply believed in the impact the programs have on the kids, community, and school culture.
Finally, Urban Initiatives Board Member and US Head of Diversity and Inclusion at BMO Harris Bank Cedric Thurman made an appeal to guests to engage with Urban Initiatives through the Corporate Challenge Cup.
Special thanks to Emily Taft and the team at Optiver, Brian McBride, Krish Mohip, Cedric Thurman, and Virgin Hotels for hosting the breakfast.
